Luna Lee: Was Jimi Hendrix influenced by the Gayageum?

Girl rocks Hendrix song “Voodoo Chile” on a Korean instrument called the gayageum.

Norm Miller sent this in…

“Ok, this isn’t a guitar but it IS acoustic and this girl totally rocks it! Somewhere up there, a young fella named Jimi is smiling!”

Thanks Norm!

So I’m looking at this and saying .. what instrument is this?

It’s kind of like a cross between a hammered dulcimer and a pedal steel… hum. Or a lap version of a sitar…

Well, apparently a lot of people are liking this vid- it’s got almost 2 million views.

And performing Hendrix on this? I’m sure this is not what is normally played on the Gayageum…

But you know what… it just works… and the reason in my opinion it does is, Jimi had nearly identical bends that he did on his guitar.

This instrument totally lends itself to all of those little embellishments…

The note bending though is achieved by pressing down…

Luna obviously picked up on that….

Now if you think about it, you’d have to wonder if Jimi was influenced by the gayageum? A little scary isn’t it? Something to think about…
